Enclave Press publishes works that are in the public domain. The text is free: put the reader on a Ledger and you have the whole book, for nothing, for good.
What the press sells is a copy: one number out of a fixed run, kept in the secure chip of your own device, which you can hand to somebody else exactly once and which never exists twice.
Questions
Can I read the book without buying anything?
Yes. Install the reader and the whole book is on your device, for nothing. Same text a buyer gets.
Do I need a Ledger, and which one?
A Ledger Flex or a Ledger Stax. You read on the device's screen, so a Nano is too small. We aren't Ledger.
Then what exactly am I buying?
A number. Copy seven of fifty: a key made in your device's chip, and signed papers saying which number it is. There will never be a fifty-first.
Is my copy on the blockchain? Is this an NFT?
No. No token, no contract, no marketplace, no wallet that displays it.
The copy is a certificate and a key inside the secure element of one device. The only thing on a chain is the payment. You can't list it and you can't sell it to a stranger. You move it by handing it to another device, in person.
What happens if I lose the device, or reset it?
It's gone. The key isn't in your recovery phrase, so nothing restores it, us included. That's what makes it a thing and not a file.
Your money is fine, that's what the phrase is for. If you're about to reset, give the copy to another device first.
Can I give it away?
Yes, once. Two devices in the same room, four words on both screens, a tap each: it arrives on theirs and is gone from yours. Say it's a loan and the device writes lent into the history, signed.
Can I sell it?
You can hand it to a buyer. There's no marketplace and no escrow, so you're trusting them for the money. We take no cut and can't reverse it.
Is this DRM?
No. Nothing is locked, so there's nothing to unlock. A buyer's reader is byte for byte the one everybody else gets.
Can the reader touch my money?
No. It makes its own key in the chip, asks for no derivation path and never sees a wallet key. The only thing you ever sign is one transfer of twenty dollars, named on the device's screen.
What if Enclave Press disappears?
The book keeps working. It's on your device, not our server, and the copy still verifies offline against papers the device carries.
No new editions after that, and an open one stops at the copies already pressed.
